We want to re-address the very difficult subject of suicide threats on the forum. First, this is a very rare occurrence, but certainly an unsettling and disturbing one for all of us. Suicide threats should always be taken seriously, and since none of us are psychiatrists or trained to handle this situation, we want everyone to know what to do in the event that a poster threatens, or appears to threaten suicide.

1. Take it seriously.

2. Post the suicide hotline number (which we will include at the bottom of this post for the US and other countries) and encourage the person to call it at once. Also suggest that they call a friend or family who is near by.

3. Immediately notify the moderators and board members so the thread can be lockedthis is one situation where a poster needs professional advice.

Given that this site is designed to afford members the anonymity to safely share their circumstances with others who have experienced similar issues, we do not collect any personally identifying information whatsoever. Contrary to what some believe, an IP address does not identify someones location beyond a very general area, nor could authorities get specific information from an Internet provider without a court order--in other words, not fast enough when time is of the essence.

Hotline numbers:

In the US, the National Suicide Prevention Hotline is 1-800-273-8255.
