Mort Fertel's Marriage Fitness

This program was one of the programs reviewed by http://www.marriage-help-review.org/, which we discussed in another thread.

The program was highly rated by this review site, they stated "Mort Fertel's advice is sound. The information found in the Marriage Fitness program is easy to apply and practical. The crux of Mort Fertel's approach to saving marriages is truly groundbreaking in the field."

His program comes in three formats: a set of CDs you can purchase, a full-blown "Tele-Boot Camp" multimedia kit which includes one-on-one coaching, and a basic set of email advice available for free.

I signed up for the free emails last week, and have received a new email every other day. There are, I believe, seven in all, and I'm up to the third one. I have to say that I like his approach. He eschews the traditional "learn how to communicate" approach in favor of one that concentrates on doing small things for one another and rediscovering why you married each other in the first place.

His first "secret" is to "put your problems aside" and instead of working to resolve the issues lying between you, to work instead on rebuilding the intimate connection between you. I agree with this approach, as I have found in my own marriage that once the love and intimacy is restored, many of the things that were problems seemed to resolve themselves.

I will report again after I have received all seven of the emails with my opinion on the whole series. Anyone who is interested, of course, can sign up for the emails with no obligation. Although for some reason I have received two copies of each email, I have not received any unwanted commercial appeals from this program.

I have just received and read the fifth of the seven basic emails from this program. How to get your spouse to change. Very interesting take on the whole idea. Many of us are familiar with the idea that you cannot make your spouse change, and that most people who want their spouse to change will find better results by making changes themselves that will inspire the spouse to want to also change. Mort Fertel takes it a step further and indicates that people will very often resist changing if their spouse is the one asking for it - but they will often be open to considering the idea if it comes from someone other than the spouse.

So far these emails have been good reading. Since I've been thinking about the general topic of marriage and marriage improvement for some time, a lot of the ideas are not new, but he does manage to find new twists on the way the idea is presented that catch my attention. Two more emails to go.

I have received all of the seven basic emails from the Mort Fertel program. All of them were thought-provoking and worthwhile, although none were actually revolutionary - but then, I've been studying other programs for some time. All of these WOULD have been revolutionary if I had found them in my Bad Old Days.

Of course, there is a pitch on each email for the "Marriage Fitness Tele-Boot Camp" program, but that is to be expected. Each pitch appears at the end of the email, which still leaves plenty of meat on the mail.

Unexpectedly, though, I have continued to receive thought-provoking emails from Mort Fertel, about every other day. Today's email had the topic "What to do when one spouse is depressed", and Mort advanced the idea that sometimes, it isn't that the depression is affecting the marriage - but that the marriage is affecting the depression. This made me think... and made sense.

While I have continued to receive emails, I have yet to see one that is all pitch and no thought. In other words, I've found something worthwhile in every email.
