In the middle of separation and pending divorce... T tested me for moderate to severe depression and gave ok to seek meds... Looking to just have a little safety net to get me through the holidays...

Anyone had any experience with St. John's Wort? vs typical meds?

The prescription meds have more of an impact, but they also have more side effects. If you think you can manage waiting for the prescription meds, you could try an OTC med first, like St. John's Wort, or SAM-E (sp?) or... there's another HTP5 or something? You can also try making sure you eat well especially getting enough protein, complex carbs and omega-3 fatty acids and make sure you exercise (esp. running or walking). If that doesn't work after 2-4 weeks you could then try prescription meds.

If you are taking any other medications (such as cholesterol, blood pressure, etc) be sure to ask your doctor. Because it is an herb and sold over the counter, many people do not consider drug interactions, and there can be several. Also, be on the lookout for these effects if you begin taking it:

Some of the possible side effects of St. John's wort include diarrhea, insomnia, and headaches. Although these reactions are merely bothersome, more serious side effects can also occur while using the supplement. Potentially serious problems include heart palpitations, hallucinations, or signs of an allergic reaction. If you experience any of these side effects, report them to your healthcare provider immediately.

Prescription anti depressants can also have these and other side effects. I would make sure you keep in close touch with your doctor whatever you decide to do. Also, my opinion is to avoid Effexor XR at all costs. it is a go to for lots of doctors because it works so quickly, but the withdrawals can put otherwise "sane" people into the psych ward. It is bad stuff.

I consider taking medication for diagnosed depression the same as taking insulin for diagnosed type I diabetes, so there is no shame in needing this for awhile.

I was at a conference this week and a physician gave a talk about Alternative medicine. She is a family practice physician who utilizes both conventional and alternative medicine. She said the only alternative medicine she uses are those that are proven by evidence based research. Here is a link she shared with us.

National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine

Here is a link to evidence based articles specific to St John's Wort.

I would consult a Doc before taking St John's wort and monitor carefully....my H took it and it really helped with his depression but really increased his anger and limited his patience....which can happen

And remember, exercise can be almost as helpful as any medicine or supplement.

Get busy with yourself. Your body's natural chemicals are all you need.

Start doing things you have not done in recent years. Find something to cleanse your negative energy with.

There are no better drugs than your own strength to prevail.

You can handle it.
