The Dark Side of the Moon
MAers,

First of all, I want to give an accounting of where we are financially with GoDaddy. This is a good report.

In October, MA extended our hosting agreement to November 2019. GoDaddy is upgrading their hardware to remain competitive in the market, so they needed us off of their old servers. They also have to lower their monthly cost to remain competitive. So, we migrated to another server with a large credit balance.

That credit balance was used to pay them to migrate the environment, extend our hosting contract to April 2024, and extend our domain name until 2029. We also get more disk space, more RAM (memory), longer backup retention, and more monthly bandwidth.

At the end of the day, it cost $127.10 in additional money to receive all of this. Since we were planning to spend thousands to renew services in 2019, this was by far the better deal.

So, we are good as far as our domain and hosting for the foreseeable future.

Now, let's talk about what happened with the migration. There are two servers, the one we were on (source) and the one we are on now (destination). GoDaddy copied our files from the Source to the Destination the night of 4/6-4/7. However, our domain name still had members going to the old server. Thus, any new content was on the Source server but not on the Destination server. On 4/14, they switched our DNS to have our domain name point to the Destination Server.

Thus, no one could see the content beyond 4/6. It hadn't been copied to the server they were viewing. People then created new content on the Destination server.

Now we have two systems with asynchronous data. And that's a bugger to deal with. Posts, for instance, are automatically assigned a unique number by the system when they are created. With two different systems that are out of sync, the same number has been assigned to two entirely different posts.

So, I called GoDaddy, scheduled a new copy of the data from the Source to the Destination for midnight on 4/19, and ran queries to extract the data from Friday before the information on the Destination server was overwritten from the Source server.

This differential information has to be manually manipulated, since the posts will have post ids that are already in use now. That is what I am doing.

I know this is a long post, but I wanted everyone to be aware of what has happened and what is being done. I'm also not making this a global announcement, so that people can ask questions.

Thanks for your patience,
AR

That was a remarkably concise and clear explanation.

Thank you, AR, for that and for the considerable effort you must make to manually resolve the remaining gaps.

I agree, very easy to understand explanation of things I usually do not understand.

Thanks for all your hard work on this AR.

So, I'm looking into several reported errors. I have found some errors in our server log pertaining to excessive memory (RAM) use, which doesn't make sense.

I'm investigating now, this is just one tidbit I've already discovered.

Hey AR,

Thanks so much for all you do. I am so glad you care enough to invest all the time and effort you generously give to keep MA running smoothly during these transitions.

The reason it makes no sense is that our last server ran the exact same software, had less memory, and we didn't have this problem.

Just for additional info.

AR,
My computer is throwing up warnings that this site is unsafe and contains Malware all of the sudden. Has anyone else reported this or can you thing of a reason this might be happening?
