I have to agree with Orchid. That's the thing that has taken me aback from the very beginning, her level of "engagement" is staggering.

Those photos are like the ones my husband takes of models and animals, she's looking right THROUGH the camera at us!

I'm so glad she's loving the water time with you. Thanks for sharing her "growing up" journey with us. It's really amazing!

Thanks, everyone! I've now officially given up on breastfeeding and pumping. She's on formula, and she is still doing well. I believe she's around 11 lbs now, but I have to wait until her next appointment for an exact weight.

We had a good Easter. A couple in my neighborhood are raising money to adopt a son from China, so they put out Easter Eggs and wrote letters from the Easter Bunny for a fee. We got her an Easter Basket, some books and small things for it, and put it out the night before.

My husband is in Tokyo, and my new semester starts this week. I'm learning to do many things one-handed!

Alysabeth is very, very aware and engaged now. She's vocalizing. She loves to watch the dancing Pikachu video (which can get annoying), as well as the Gummy Bear. Watching Pikachu dance:

[Linked Image]

We also watch an ABCs video, but she hasn't stayed awake beyond the letter K, yet. I ordered her an Otteroo, and she loves to swim in that. LOVES it. One time she bopped around the tub for 2.75 hours and was STILL mad when I took her out. She pushes off the walls and floor of the tub to go where she wants.

Her professional photos are in, so I'll post some of those.

I'm completely smitten! She's a beauty - those delicate little fingers and sweet sleeping face.... sigh - baby hunger at 58...

I gotta tell you AR, those professional pictures don’t do a thing for me compared to the pics YOU take. The pro pics could be a doll or something. They aren’t alive, ENGAGED like the ones you take. I can really get a sense of who your little girl is with your pics! The pro pics are lovely and all, but I like yours so much more!

And I love how she’s zooming around in the water! Amazing

Kayla,

Come visit. She loves to cuddle!

Miranda,

I like them both. I am in awe of a photographer's ability with lighting, etc. Something lens, shutter speed, thingie stuff. lol I also like the pictures that show her personality. I'm glad I have both. Thank you for your compliments on my pictures. I just aim my camera phone at her, keep tapping, and then pick the ones that look decent.

Blair,

Thank you!

Orchid,

No, not for dating. I will consider them motivation for doing well in school and following rules. I'm not above purchasing space on a billboard outside the school with a picture that says, "Mommy's little angel!"

Think that would motivate her? dance

She had her 4 month (!!!) well visit last Thursday. She's now 56.5 cm (22.25 in) long and 10 lb 12 oz (4.9 kg). Her umbilical herniation has closed.

She has developed her first case of diaper rash since she left the hospital. She has 4 areas with terrible sores (raw, layers of skin obviously gone). I've been changing her diaper frequently, cleaning her gently, letting her air dry, applying creme... It's getting better, but the fact that she's in pain tears me up.

I have a new approach to selecting toys. The research on the "best" toys was not yielding positive results. For the tech geeks out there (NED, Mgellan...), I say most of them failed UAT. lol New approach: take her to the store, show her toys, select ones that catch her attention. This method has been yielding better results.

Believer - that video you suggested has been very helpful!

She LOVES it when I sing to her. Now, I know that my performance would make my old theatre instructors cringe, but she doesn't know that! She thinks it's wonderful. So, I do the songs I've mentioned before, plus Into The Woods, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Les Miserables, etc. We listen to the classics - Led Zeppelin, etc - but also classical music. She has a thing for Mozart and Strauss. Brahms puts her to sleep. She's seemingly ambivalent toward Tchaikovsky and Beethoven.

I have completed my second week of classes, and they are going very well. It's nice to be back in academia discussing interesting, esoteric topics.

AR I love your updates. Hang in there with the diaper rash, when I taught preschool even the worst rashes were gone by the end of the week. With my own kids I could not stand rash and would leave them in the air or put cloth diapers until they were better. In retrospect it probably wasn’t that serious lol.

That’s too funny about the toys not passing UAT! I’m glad she’s finding stuff she does like. Does she dance when you sing yet? What magical days!

What are you studying?

She loves YOUR singing because she's been hearing your voice since she had anything to hear WITH! Those are the first sounds she was ever aware of, and the tone, timbre and pitch of your voice is familiar and appealing. Even if you were the worst singer in the world, it would be wonderful to her.

So don't worry about the quality of it. Just keep doing it, with joy and gusto! I love the wide range of music you're giving her. That's sure to be a winner as well.

Glad to hear you're feeding YOUR mind as well.

Are you using zinc on the diaper rash? That seems to be a widely tolerated and effective thing. Zinc and cornstarch!

Is it OK to admit I loved the baby Songs videos? I watched them for hours with both kids. And sang all the songs over and over. They seem to have survived the ordeal just fine.

NED,

Great prediction! It’s been a week, and her bum is now flawless. Soft and smooth as a baby’s butt, which it is.

Going one more level into geek, I switched my focus from secondary research to primary research.

We dance. She loves to dance. She smiles, bops her head, and waves her arms.

I’m currently working on my MBA with an emphasis in Business Analytics.

Hi Miranda,

I used the tube of cream they gave me when she was discharged. Its active ingredient is zinc oxide.

I’ve learned to sing loud and proud. She’s my #1 fan, so it’s not like I’m in front of a highly critical audience.

HOI,

I enjoy the children’s songs and shows, as well. There’s a relief in focusing on the important things and escaping adult content for a while. Adults often over-complicate the simplist things.
